About Us
Our Mission Statement
Glass Canon Theatre Company is a 501(c)3 organization committed to producing exceptional theatre for the D.C. community that is inclusive, engaging, and relevant with a focus on classical work. Our company strives to support artists, audiences, and students alike through our season programming, new play development, and educational offerings. Glass Canon Theatre Company operates under its five core values of Artistry, Collaboration, Inclusion, Joy and Sustainability.
Our Values
Artistry
By dedicating ourselves to the craft of theatre, we create work that is inspirational to artists and audiences alike. We strive to make theatre that is skillful, thoughtful, and impactful— the kind of theatre that resonates.
Collaboration
Collaboration is what makes good art great. We create strong, well-rounded work through creative pluralism, community engagement, and the pursuit of diverse perspectives.
Inclusion
Glass Canon is a space where all are celebrated in their fullness, inclusive of ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, neurodivergence, religious affiliation, and more. We endeavor to have diversity of identity and thought at all levels of the organization, and to foster respect and care among patrons and company members alike.
Joy
Joy builds resilience and community, and is a vital part of the artistic process. Glass Canon strives to create intentional spaces where artists and audiences can share in the joy of live performance.
Sustainability
Glass Canon aims to cultivate physical, mental, organizational, and environmental sustainability in all aspects of its operations. We believe sustainability requires hiring local artists who believe and invest in their community, remaining carbon-neutral, and practicing individual and community accountability.
About Glass Canon
Why “Glass Canon?”
A “glass cannon” (two N’s) is an object or person with remarkable output, but is fragile, and prone to breaking.
The “canon” (one N) is the list of works considered to be permanently established as being of the highest quality.
“Glass Canon” represents our transparent practices, commitment to classical works, and the ephemerality of the theatre we create.
Why start a theatre company now?
There has never been a better time to start a theatre company. Lack of federal funding and executive influence has crippled the once-great theatrical institutions of Washington. Now more than ever, artists must lift their voices against injustice, demagoguery, and hate.
As early and mid career artists, we could think of no better way to see the theatre we want than to create it. The talented actors and designers of the DMV deserve another outlet to showcase their brilliant work. It is our privilege to give them a place to do so at this most crucial time. We at Glass Canon look forward to furthering our mission, and providing world-class theatre in DC.
